April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month—a time to come together, raise awareness, and
support survivors in our communities. It’s also a reminder that sexual violence is more common
than many realize, and that each of us has a role in creating safer, more respectful
environments
Sexual assault can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. It often goes unreported, and many survivors carry their experiences in silence. That’s why awareness matters because when we talk about it, we help break stigma, reduce shame, and let survivors know they are not alone.
Understanding Consent
Consent is a key part of healthy relationships. It is clear, voluntary, and ongoing. It should never
be assumed or forced, and it can be withdrawn at any time. Respecting boundaries is essential,
and communication is the foundation of mutual trust and safety.
Supporting Survivors
If someone shares their experience with you, your response matters more than you may realize.
You don’t need to have all the answers, just being there can make a difference.
● Listen without judgment
● Believe them
● Respect their choices
● Encourage support when they feel ready
Healing looks different for everyone, and survivors deserve to move at their own pace.
Recognizing the Signs
Sexual violence doesn’t always look the same. It can include coercion, manipulation, pressure,
or situations where someone feels unable to say no. Learning to recognize these behaviors
helps us better support others and challenge harmful norms.
How You Can Help
Creating change doesn’t have to be big or small actions matter.
● Speak up when something doesn’t feel right
● Keep learning and sharing with others
● Support local organizations doing this work
● Check in on the people around you
Even little things can make a difference in creating a safer, more respectful community.
