Planning for Safety: Yourself, Your Children, and Your Pets
Separating from an abusive partner can be one of the most dangerous times in an abusive relationship. Studies show that violence often escalates when a survivor attempts to leave.
Other times when danger may increase include:
- Child visitation exchanges
- After serving protection orders, divorce, or custody documents
- During court proceedings, DHS meetings, or other scheduled appointments
- At work, especially when working specific shifts
- When the abuser exhibits sudden changes in behavior
- If there is movement of a firearm
- When threats become detailed, specific, or include harm to you, your children, pets, or the abuser
