Sexual assault occurs whenever sexual activity happens without consent. It can involve coercion, force, or manipulation and may happen between strangers, acquaintances, friends, or even intimate partners.
Sexual assault is a deeply impactful experience, regardless of the level of violence or the victim's relationship with the perpetrator. Survivors often feel overwhelmed, confused, and unsure of what to do next—but support is available.
Your Options After an Assault:
- If you are 18 or older, reporting to law enforcement is your choice. You can call 911 to file a report.
- You may also request a forensic medical exam without reporting to law enforcement. Evidence collected will be preserved, allowing you to decide later if you want to report.
Advocates can:
- Help you explore your options and support your choices.
- Accompany you to medical exams and law enforcement interviews.
- Provide follow-up care and resources.
